Housed in the Mall of America, Underwater Adventures Aquarium offers a wonderful educational experience for visitors of all ages.
The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota (a suburb of Minneapolis) attracts visitors from all over the world. In addition to over 500 stores and restaurants, the mall houses an indoor amusement park (Nickelodeon Universe), movie theater, wedding chapel and underground aquarium. Exhibits at Underwater Adventures Aquarium at the Mall of AmericaThe underwater journey begins with an exhibit offering information about fish native to Minnesota. Some exhibits/species to see include trout, koi, snakes and a very large alligator snapping turtle. The exhibit also offers educational facts about other wildlife and natural resources in the state of Minnesota. The Aquarium/Tunnel at Underwater Adventures in Bloomington, MinnesotaAfter visiting the Minnesota Exhibit, guests proceed to an all glass tunnel, the main area of the aquarium. In the tunnel one can see and photograph a wide array of fish and other marine life. No matter one's age, one can't help but "ooh" and "aah" at the experience of observing large sharks, turtles and stingray swimming all around, as well as over head. A feature of the tunnel is the moving floor. Although it's a good concept to help keep traffic moving along, most people are on and off of the moving floor to take photos, or simply get a closer look. With large crowds it can at times become hectic and chaotic. Other Exhibits at the Mall of America AquariumVarious other exhibits add to the aquarium experience. These include seahorses, crabs, octopus, piranhas, jellyfish and snails. There are also fun exhibits for the children to enjoy such as a Pirate's Treasure Box, the Finding Nemo Exhibit (which includes fish from the popular Disney movie) and a virtual underwater thrill ride (additional fee required). Hands On Activities at Underwater Adventures AquariumBefore leaving visitors are allowed to both handle and touch various water creatures including crabs and starfish. Other learning experiences are also possible for an additional fee. These include an opportunity to feed or scuba with the sharks, swim with the fish or tour the entire operation. One can also host a birthday or slumber party at the aquarium. Various souvenirs and gifts are available for purchase at the aquarium's gift shop. General admission to the aquarium is $18.99 for tweens, teens and adults, and $12.49 for youth. Admission is free for children 2 and under. Out of town guests can choose from a number of hotels near the mall. Some options include a Country Inn and Suites, Homewood Suites, Marriott and Residence Inn. If willing to drive one can also opt to stay in downtown Minneapolis (about a 15-20 minute drive).
