Everybody gets to be Irish on St. Pat's Day. Townspeople gather for parades, pub crawls, green beer, Celtic music and hearty plates of corned beef and cabbage.
Saint Patrick's Day is in mid March, which is a good time to get out of the winter doldrums and attend a rollicking parade. St. Patrick's Day was initially a religious observance in Ireland, honoring the Irish Saint of nearly 1600 years ago. St. Patrick's parades were started in America as a show of the power of the Irish vote, "The Green Machine." Now it seems like just about everyone gets in the act and parties on St. Patrick's Day.
Parades march across the nation. Leprechauns, shamrocks and green carnations pop up all over. People of all nationalities, religions and political affiliations get into the act by attending the parades and lifting a pint or so of emerald green beer. Pubs, taverns and community centers fill with merriment, music and dancing as everyone gets to be Irish for a day. Traditional St. Pat's menus include corned beef and cabbage, Reuben sandwiches and hot Irish stew. Hearty food is washed down by green beer, Guinness or smooth Irish whiskey.
