A quick and easy hike with a terrific view of Lake Superior. Enjoy the local wildlife with this fun northshore activity on your next US road trip through Minnesota.
Want to take in an astounding view of Lake Superior, without having to spend the better part of a day winding up a perilous hiking trail? Britton’s Peak is easily accessible from County Road 61 in northern Minnesota, and requires less than 20 minutes of moderately strenuous hiking from start to finish. It’s one of the lovelier short hikes along the famous Gunflint Trail. So if you’re planning a road trip through Lake County, be sure to stop in the lakeside town of Tofte for a taste of the northland’s natural splendor.
If you’re driving north on the 61 towards Grand Marais, take a left on Sawbill Trail, drive up the hill about 2 miles, and then make a right into the clearly-designated parking area (just before the end of the paved road). You’ll find ample parking and well-marked trailposts indicating the path to Britton’s Peak. It’ll take about ten minutes to trek up to the top of the steep hill, but it’s well worth the effort. Atop the peak, you’ll enjoy a panoramic perspective of Lake Superior, as well as an aerial view of an immense canopy of white pine treetops.
White-tailed deer, red squirrels, woodpeckers, and pheasant inhabit the woodlands surrounding Britton’s Peak, so don’t be surprised if you come across an inquisitive critter on your way back down to the parking area. And if you’d like to bring your own furry friend along, that’s fine, too -- according to trailhead signs posted as of November 2007, Britton's Peak is still a dog-friendly hike. Just make sure to put your pup on a leash and bring plenty of clean-up baggies.
For those who want a slightly more vigorous hike, the longer Carlton Peak trail is accessible from the same parking area as Britton’s Peak, and should only take an hour or so to complete. One note of caution: make sure you attempt both the Britton and Carlton trails on dry days, or you may find yourself up to your ankles in mud and decomposing debris. Regardless of your athletic prowess, always bring along a hiking buddy or inform a friend about when you expect to re-enter civilization.
So you've done your hiking for the day -- what next? Well, you can visit the town of Grand Marais (26 miles north of Tofte) for upscale dining, antique shopping, and beautiful lakeside strolls. Or there's the significantly smaller town of Schroeder (just 4 miles south of Tofte) where the marvelous Schroeder Falls are accessible directly off County Road 61. Or just stay put in Tofte and stop by one of the local cafes for a cozy meal in a rustic, cabin-like setting. Either way, you're in for a treat. Every town along Lake Superior's north shore is full of one-of-a-kind charm. You'll want to stay forever!
